Is Your Pool Equipment Ready for Spring?

Spring is around the corner, and that means it’s time to make sure your pool is ready for action. While most pool owners focus on cleaning and water chemistry, your pool equipment needs just as much attention. Getting ahead of potential issues now can save you from costly repairs and downtime when it’s time to swim. Here’s how to check if your pool equipment is ready for spring.

Start With the Pool Pump

Your pool pump is the heart of the system. Before the season starts, make sure it’s working efficiently. Look for cracks in the housing, check for leaks, and listen for unusual noises when it runs. If your pump struggles to start or sounds louder than usual, it might need servicing or replacement.

Inspect the Pool Filter

A clean, functioning filter is critical for clear water. Remove and clean the filter cartridge, backwash a sand filter, or recharge a DE filter. While you’re at it, check for tears, clogs, or excessive wear. If the filter is over three to five years old and not performing well, it might be time to upgrade.

Check Your Pool Heater

If you use a pool heater, inspect it before temperatures rise. Remove any debris or nests that may have built up around the unit. Make sure it fires up properly and heats efficiently. If you notice a drop in performance or strange smells, call a technician to check the burners and internal components.

Test Timers, Automation Systems, and Lights

Spring is also a great time to test your pool automation system, timers, and lighting. Make sure all schedules are set correctly and that everything powers on as expected. Update your control panel or app if there’s a software update available.

Examine Plumbing and Valves for Leaks

Inspect all PVC piping, valves, and unions for any signs of leaks or wear. Cold weather and shifting ground can cause cracks or loose connections. Tighten fittings, replace any visibly damaged parts, and run the system to check for leaks under pressure.

A Quick Check Now Saves Headaches Later

Don’t wait until your first pool party to realize something’s wrong. A simple pre-season inspection and some basic maintenance will get your pool equipment running smoothly—and keep it that way all season long. If anything seems off, call a pool professional early while schedules are still open and parts are in stock.
