5 Pool Maintenance Tips to Start the New Year Right

Starting the new year with a clean, well-maintained pool sets the tone for a smooth swimming season ahead. Whether your pool is closed for winter or still in use (hello, heated pools), a little upkeep now can save you time and money later. Here are five smart pool maintenance tips to kick off the year right.

1. Inspect Your Pool Equipment

Start with a visual and functional check of your pool equipment. Look at your pump, filter, heater, and any automation systems. Listen for unusual sounds and check for signs of wear or leaks. Even if everything seems fine, this is a good time to schedule a professional inspection—especially if your equipment is older than five years.

2. Clean and Balance the Water

Even if your pool isn’t open, stagnant water can get out of balance during the off-season. If the pool is covered but still has water in it, test the pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels. Add winter chemicals if needed to prevent algae and scaling.

If your pool is running year-round, make sure you’re cleaning the water weekly, brushing the walls, and running the pump for at least 8 hours a day.

3. Check Your Pool Cover

A damaged or poorly secured pool cover can lead to serious problems—think debris buildup, algae growth, or worse, accidents. Clear off leaves, water, and snow. Inspect for rips or sagging, and tighten any loose straps or anchors. Replacing a worn-out cover now is cheaper than dealing with a messy cleanup in spring.

4. Clean the Filter System

Dirty filters make your pump work harder and reduce water quality. Whether you have a sand, cartridge, or DE filter, give it a thorough clean at the start of the year. If your filter is over three years old and struggling to keep up, it might be time to replace it.

5. Plan Ahead for Pool Repairs or Upgrades

January is a great time to schedule repairs or upgrades before the spring rush. Have you noticed cracked tiles, worn liners, or outdated features? Handle those now, when pool service companies have more availability and quicker turnaround times.

Stay Ahead With Simple Pool Maintenance

Taking a little time in January to check your pool systems, clean things up, and plan ahead can save you a lot of hassle when swim season arrives. Routine maintenance now helps avoid costly repairs later—and keeps your pool in great shape year-round.
